THE BUYING ANSWER

Start with a clear definition.

Show the inside and outside of a reference seam and describe the desired appearance, edge coverage and bulk. Ask the maker to identify a suitable construction for the selected fabric. A seam name alone can leave important finishing details unresolved.

The decision behind the detail.

The neatest visible stitch is not necessarily the only construction requirement. Include the reverse side and the way adjoining layers sit.

PREPARE ONLY WHAT IS RELEVANT

Three details to bring.

Seam location
Mark the seam on the garment drawing.
Desired finish
Describe visible stitching, enclosed edges and acceptable bulk.
Reference views
Identify inside and outside photographs to compare.

Check together

  • Review the seam in the actual proposed material.
  • Check the inside as well as the presentation side.
  • Record the agreed construction on the specification.
