THE BUYING ANSWER

Start with a clear definition.

Record the repeat direction and dimensions from the selected fabric or artwork, then identify the motif areas that matter on the finished product. A fabric swatch can show the pattern without showing how it lands on small panels.

The decision behind the detail.

A large repeat can produce very different visible motifs across otherwise identical shapes. Decide which variation is acceptable and which placement needs control.

PREPARE ONLY WHAT IS RELEVANT

Three details to bring.

Repeat reference
Identify the artwork or fabric repeat being considered.
Important motifs
Name the pattern elements that should be visible.
Placement scope
State whether placement is fixed or intentionally variable.

Check together

  • Review the repeat against the smallest panel.
  • Check pattern direction on paired pieces.
  • Record accepted variation in the sample comments.
